The major issues affecting the sector in the 21st century, including food security, depleting natural resources, climate change, genetically modified crops and changes in global eating habits.
Enter vertical farming – the idea of building entire skyscrapers occupied with vertically-stacked farms that produce crops twice as fast, while using 40% less power, having 80% less food waste, and using 99% less water than outdoor fields.

Vertical farming is defined as when plants or crops are grown inside of a skyscraper greenhouse or on a vertically Revolutionizing Urban Farming inclined surface. A vertical farm is any building that grows plants and is higher than a single storey.
Water and Nutrient
The hydrophonic system is a key part of vertical farming. VFARM specifically uses the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) where plants are grown in a soilless solution that is recycled from a reservoir. This provides hydration (water), oxygen and nutrients, which are normally found in soil, and are required for roots. In vertical farms the roots are uncovered and exposed to more oxygen, the plants/crops will be able to grow at a faster rate. This NFT hydrophonic system is called a closed loop system and uses 95% less water than traditional farming methods.
LED lighting gives out light of different wavelengths that target different types of chlorophyll. This increases the amount of sunlight absorbed, therefore making photosynthesis very efficient, thus assisting in achieving the primary goal of vertical farming which is to produce more food per square meter.
Support structure on medium such as cloth, separates the aerial portion of the plants from their roots and gives them support to grow. It is also used for seeding, germination (when seeds sprout).

The VFarm User Interface Engine is where all interactions with the user is performed, and is design for ease of use.
